The First Thanksgiving
King James became the king of England in 1603. He was head of both the church and the country. He did not like the Separatists. So, the Separatists left England seeking a safe place to practice their religion.
The Separatists left Holland on the Speedwell and sailed to England. There they met others like them as well as "Strangers." The filled two ships: the Speedwell and Mayflower. They set sail in July 1620. The Speedwell gave them lots of trouble. So, they decided to leave it behind. Finally, the Pilgrims left for the New World on September 1620. The trip was harsh, but the Pilgrims were tough. While at sea, a baby was born named Oceanus. After 65 days at sea, the Pilgrims finally reached Plymoth, Massachusetts.
The Separatists fled to Amsterdam and eventually, Leyden, Holland. . Life was good for a while, but they were still unhappy. They were poor and still didn't have the right to worship the way they wanted.
Squanto, a Wampanoag Indian, helped the Pilgrims survive by teaching how to grow crops and showed them how to fish. and hunt.
Before the left the ship, the Pilgrims wrote the Mayflower Compact. This treaty said they would be loyal to the King of England, but follow there own laws in the New World.
Life was hard for the Pilgrims. Food scarce and the winters were harsh.. The Pilgrims were detemined to establsih a community and preserve their traditions. The met the Wampanoags, an Native American tribe. They helped the Pilgrims.
After the Harvest, the Pilgrims invited the Wampanoags to a feast. They ate turkey, shellfsh, deer, vegetables, fruit and nuts. The celebration lasted three days. The played games, had a church service, told stories and sang songs. This was the first Thanksgiving.
